As the trials proceeded, the government established a court specifically for witchcraft cases called Oyer and Terminer. The Magna Carta states that no freeman will be imprisoned or punished without first going through the proper legal system. Salem's court system accepted spectral evidence and gossip as real evidence. This denied people of a legitimate and conventional trial. In addition, touch tests were used, where if the accused made contact with an afflicted victim and the fit stopped, it "showed" the accused had caused the affliction. People searched for "witch marks," which if found on the skin of the accused, it declared their guilt.
