The Puritans and the Superstitions
During the trying times of the late 1600's, the majority of Salem villagers were Puritans, so all aspects of life revolved around the church. The main beliefs were that Satan was active in this world and that he gave his followers power to use to hurt others.
The community felt that Satan chose the weakest individuals to carry out his commands. At this time, women were thought to be morally weak, so they would be easily tempted into sin. The community also deemed that all sins, including witchcraft, would be punished, making the typical villager paranoid about witchcraft.
